Griffin was the son of Sir Edward Griffin of Dingley and Gumley Ewing Northamptonshire. He matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford on 16 October 1601, aged 14. In April 1640, Griffin was elected Member of Parliament for Downton in the Short Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Downton in the Long Parliament and sat until he was disabled on 5 February 1644.
